The BB64 USS Wisconsin is the fourth of the originally planned six ships of the Iowa class battleships. These where the BB61 Iowa, the BB62 New Jersey, the BB63 Missouri, the BB65 Illinois and the BB66 Kentucky. However,the last two ships (BB65 and BB66) where never finished.
January 25 1941 the keel of the USS Wisconsin was laid at Philadelphia Naval Yard and the ship was commissioned in April 1944. The battleship participated for the rest of the Second World War in all major naval operations in the Pacific. She was decommissioned in 1948. Wisconsin was recommissioned in 1951 and took part in the Korean War. After the Korea campaign she participated in several training cruises and exercises including a naval visit to my capital Copenhagen in 1955. During this period Wisconsin went through a series of overhauls. In 1958 she was once more deactivated. This time for 30 years.
During the period of 1986 – 1989 the Wisconsin went through a major reactivation and modification and upgrade programmes making her capable to fight a high tech war in a contemporary environment. In August 1990 she was deployed to the Persian Gulf where she participated in the Gulf War supporting the air and land campaign with naval gunfire and missile strikes. September 1991 the USS Wisconsin was decommissioned for the last time and in 2000 she arrived to her final home in Norfolk, VA. Data (Golf War type):
