I visited New York in September 2001. It was a warm and sunny day. During my visit I vent down to the lower Manhattan and I was touring the Broadway and the 5th Avenue. I was doing all those things that a tourist normally do when he is visiting "the Apple". This included a visit to the Empire State building and to the World Trade Centre. The same evening I left New York and flew to Norfolk, Virginia. This was on the evening the 10th of September. The rest of the tragical story I'm sure that you all know.
I learned the horrible news the next day and was deeply affected by the events. At that time I was visiting the battleship USS Wisconsin berthed at the Nauticus and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. When I was walking the deck of this huge and proud ship I could see and hear the major activities taking place at the Norfolk Naval Base and the nearby Langley Air Force Base in an attempt to strike back on those hostile elements threatening the US. I could feel the enormous powers hidden in the structure below my feet. At precisely that time I decided that I would build a scale model of the BB 64. Whether I succeeded or not I will leave to you to decide. However it gave me a great pleasure to form and shape that beautiful hull, the superstructure and those impressing armaments.
My model reflects the version of the USS Wisconsin as she appeared throughout the Gulf War Campaign. She is build in the scale 1:200
